I recall when beginning my post grad work in theology meeting with a life coach as part of the orientation into that program. Burned in my mind forever, was a statement that he made saying, “David, if you don’t draw or sketch everyday, you are going to go crazy and fail miserably at seminary.” I was shocked, but also elated that someone was seeing and naming visual art as a core part of who I am and created to engage. And the fact that I was reasonably successful in my Masters degree program is a testimony to living into that counsel!
Of course I still do a lot of drawing with a pencil, but have also embraced a wide spectrum of media including charcoal, soft pastels, oils, and digital media. While I’ve explored a wide variety of subject matter, I always seem to return to my love of dance, music, form, and portraiture.
