Today was a long and arduous walk, but beautiful nonetheless. Rain in the morning made for very muddy and slippery trails as we headed inland from the coast and away from civilization. We were told that there were a couple of small restaurants toward the beginning of today’s leg, so our plan was to get breakfast there. Unfortunately both were closed, so breakfast and lunch consisted of 2 apples we had brought, a couple of protein bars, and 2 bars of Spanish chocolate. We survived but we are ready for dinner! I think at a few points today, Caleb was thinking to himself, “Why in the heck did I ever say ‘yes’ to this?!” But as the day went on he was in a better frame of mind and even serenaded me on his recorder for a good hour and a half of our walk. His melodies mixed nicely with the sounds of birds and got my mind off of my tired feet.
As we came into the town of Markina-Xemein, we went into the strangest church building I have yet been in. The very large hexagonal structure was built over and around three ginormous boulders, so I have no idea where people would sit for a worship gathering. Nor do I know why it was built that way. The photo below is a pano, so it really doesn’t do justice to the scale of the rocks.
Working backwards we did have a couple of nice stays in seaside towns, Deba, yesterday, and Geteria, the day before that. The latter felt like a very upscale tourist town, and Caleb and I both noticed that far fewer people smiled at or greeted us.
That’s it for now I guess. Caleb is sleeping, but I think the though of a warm dinner will be a pleasant way for him to wake from his nap!
