We decided to take the “high road” out of Irun, which even though it began rainy, and then turned foggy, proved to be mysterious and spectacular when we got to the top and were greeted by castle ruins, sheep, and cows. Normally we would have had a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean from up top were it not for cloud cover.
We are now waiting for the alberge at Pasaia Donibane to open at 4:00, where we have the most wonderful view of the harbor below! Our feet and legs feel tired but good, and they covet your prayers!
I should mention to that last night we attended a Pilgrim’s Mass in Irun. It was quite moving, though I always thought it was awkward attending a worship service where you are the only one who doesn’t have the liturgy memorized. Add our Basque/Spanish language barrier and we either had a great excuse or felt even more awkward! I got the feeling that the 20 or 30 people who were there, could be found there most nights praying for pilgrims beginning their journey. The fact that there were actually 3 of us pilgrims in the room, I think made it even more special for them. We felt very honored to be covered y these faithful sense prayers.
