Some of the albergues we have stayed at have been absolutely wonderful, hosts who take great joy in sharing their gift of hospitality with us. Such is the case tonight, as I smell the aromas of dinner being cooked for us while I type this. We are in Muros de Nalón at the Albergue la Naranja Peregrina, and I highly recommend it to traveling pilgrims!

However even the best albergues still means close quarters with people from all over the world, including their germs. Three days ago I felt the beginnings of a sore throat, which turned into a full-blown head cold. We took a “0” day in Gijon, which was a beautiful city to do that in. Then with yesterday being when I felt crumbiest, the three of us decided to call it a sick day and take the train 20 km to our next stop so I could rest. Much of that walk would have been through an industrial part of Gijon, so none of us put up much fuss.
Today though I feel petty good, and we were back on the trail with another 25 km day. One surprising element of northern Spain has been the amount of eucalyptus forests, the smell and vibe of which takes me back to my childhood in the San Francisco Bay Area. Both there and here, those trees were imported from Australia and have done prolifically well. Here’s some pics from today’s walk as well as other shots from Gijon and before. Following you as best as I can. Yo siento una poca enviosa
Muchas gracias. Querría que estés aquí
Glad you are feeling better! You seem to pass a fair number of churches…oh, wait….It’s Spain. Continued prayers
Amazing pics. The Rohr book sounds fascinating and an appropriate read for father and son. Happy belated Father’s day. Miss you guys around here!
Beautiful photos, and I’m glad you’re feeling better.. I went to uni in Berkeley and will always associate eucalyptus with that part of the world 🙂 Looking forward to following along with the rest of your adventures.
Thanks, Dee! I was with a pilgrim last night who now lives in Berkeley.
